Dumpsite Organization & Youth Livelihoods – Kawangware

Overview

This program supports youth whose livelihoods depend on waste recovery by improving the organization, safety, and sustainability of a community dumpsite in Kawangware.

Problem

The Kawangware dumpsite is often perceived as an environmental burden, yet it is a primary source of income for more than 70 young people. Lack of structure exposes youth to unsafe conditions, health risks, and social exclusion.

Solution

Rather than eliminating the dumpsite, Bunny Hops works to organize it through waste sorting, basic safety practices, and links to recycling value chains. The program recognizes the site as an economic space and focuses on dignity, safety, and environmental responsibility.

Impact

  • Improved safety and working conditions
  • Sustained livelihoods for youth dependent on the site
  • Better waste management and reduced environmental harm
  • Increased recognition of informal waste workers

SDG Alignment

  • SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
